Breastmilk is a live product full of antibodies and other stuff designed to help boost your baby’s immune system. Babies are born with very immature immune systems, which they need to develop over time by encountering different infections and producing antibodies to ward them off. However, you can give your baby a massive head start with breastfeeding, because breastmilk passes on specific antibodies to your baby. These antibodies are not present in formula milk.

Because breastmilk is a live substance, it can change according to your baby’s needs. If a mother is exposed to an infection she will start producing antibodies against it, and pass these on to her baby through her breastmilk. This means that a baby will get a dose of antibodies too, to help them fight off the infection.
