DO and LEARN Fall In
We’ve been thinking about cool science experiments to try this autumn. We love this experiment to find out why leaves change colour, and this very similar alternative. Things might get yukky and whiffy (hurray!) with this investigation into why apples rot, while even tiny kids will enjoy making this autumn-themed ice. And everyone will enjoy a seasonal sensory table.

EVENT Prints Charming
Nottingham Contemporary is a sharply modern gallery and arts centre that holds cutting-edge exhibitions and events, and children are most definitely part of the action. Their brilliant, free workshops run on Saturdays and Sundays, and are inspired by what’s going on elsewhere in the building. This weekend they have a T-shirt printing workshop, where families will think about colour and shape, and create and print a unique logo.

EVENT Best In Show
The wonderful Woodlands Farm in Greenwich hosts this year’s free London Harvest Festival – the capital’s 20th – this Saturday. See a host of rosette-worthy animals and produce, try blacksmithing, wood carving, spinning felting and knitting, look at vintage tractors, and have a ride on the tractor train. We’re looking forward to the duck herding demonstrations and the display of giant pumpkins! Free.

DO and COOK Harvest Home
The Jewish harvest festival, Sukkot, started last Sunday, and finishes on this Sunday. Traditionally, over this period, Jewish people eat as many meals as possible in a ‘sukkah’ – an open-ceilinged tent that is situated outside. Why not try some traditional Jewish food (there’s a collection of challah bread recipes here or some delicious butternut squash latkas here) in a blanket sukkah in your garden? You could even do some Sukkot crafts.

EVENT Discover This
Gravity Fields is a festival of science, arts, music, drama and spectacle held in Grantham to celebrate Sir Isaac Newton’s legacy. This year’s theme is ‘Voyages of Discovery’. Highlights include Museum of the Moon – a touring sound and light artwork, a family-friendly magic and alchemy show, and Saturday’s outdoor evening spectacle that includes aerial performances, an observation of the planets, illuminated gardens, a carnival, and fire and firework displays. Many free events. September 26–30. Full programme here
