EVENT, RECIPE, MAKE Saints Alive
It’s St David’s Day – head to Cardiff for a big parade that celebrates the best of Welsh culture! Alternatively, there are events at museums across the country; immerse yourself in Welsh art and tuck into a bowl of cawl at the National Museum of Wales, enjoy a special under-fives party and cool crafts at The National Waterfront Museum, visit St Fagan’s for a Victorian funfair and crafts or The National Wool Museum to make rosettes. Or perhaps revisit a site that inspires magical days out and learning – Land of Legends. Alternatively, celebrate at home and make your own milk bottle dragon mask, and bake some delicious, fragrant Welsh Cakes!
DO and MAKE A Bit Daffy
A symbol not just of St David’s Day, but also of spring, daffodils are one of the most cheering sights of the year. We’ve spotted them in gardens, parks and roadsides already. Take a walk to discover these nodding yellow flowers – there’s a great list of gardens full of them here or in the wild here. Or brighten up your home with some home-made versions; toddlers can create a jolly suncatcher, older kids these clay lamps, or amazing gigantic pinwheels and teens this elegant daffodil wreath.
RECIPE Spring Greens
Spring shoots are beginning to burst from the ground making our foraging fingers twitch. Wild garlic is in season! Why not try cooking up something truly different this year? We’re thinking green leaf sushi, fermented wild greens, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstalls Creamed Sea Beet Gratin, and these yummy-looking Wild Garlic and Quinoa Cakes or deep fried, Japanese style. Vampires beware!
EVENT Making Scents
Sense-stimulating, creative and fun, concocting perfume is one of our favourite activities. Even the youngest child can create scents – this technique includes lots of learning opportunities, while this method uses more natural ingredients found in your garden or fruit bowl. It’s a hobby that will scale up and down age groups – Teen Vogue makes the process incredibly chic, and no adult will be able to resist creating their own, bespoke herbal scent - why not hold a perfume-making party?
EVENT In the ‘Hood
Explore London’s Museum of Childhood in new and unexpected ways at their monthly Movement Play sessions. A session includes a gallery visit, followed by a movement session exploring themes from the collection, devised by choreographer Aya Kobayashi. Each session is £3 in advance (book early!) The museum is one of our favourite places in London to hang out, right now their A Pirate’s Life For Me exhibition brings together swashbuckling objects from across history and cultures while Dorothy Bohm’s Little Happenings exhibition explores the universal qualities of childhood via her life-affirming, resonant photographs.
