EVENT Harvest Home
Bring home the bounty with the new print issue of The Green Parent Magazine. Celebrating harvest, be inspired by ideas for veggie lunches and one-pot dinners, nurture the spirit of giving in your family, and discover an autumn home learning plan. You’ll also find guides to choosing the right education for your child, making sauerkraut, and how to get better sleep. Plus five free days out to mark Samhain! Head to your nearest independent magazine store, or find us in nationals including WH Smith. Get a copy delivered to your door here. Or order a subscription online and never miss an issue!

RECIPE Saving our Skins
We’ve been wolfing down watermelons over the last month, but it always seems a shame to chuck the skin in the compost bin. Which is why we love the idea of this watermelon rind pickle. Got more leftover fruit bits? Try these banana skin ideas (we like the idea of the tea and thoran), this Apple Scrap Jelly and these Apple Peel Chips - useful for the current harvest season! Candied Orange Peel is sweet and delicious and a good warder-offer of end-of-summer blues. Find lots more ideas for using up unwanted bits at Love Food Hate Waste

EVENT Ugly Mugs
Love pulling funny faces? This weekend, the Egremont Crab Fair in Cumbria hosts the annual World Gurning Championships – competitors poke their heads through a horse collar and pull the ugliest expression they can. There’s plenty else to do at the fair, which celebrates apples; watch or take part in sports, laugh at street entertainers, and try and catch an apple as they’re thrown into the air during the parade of the cart. LEARN and MAKE Rules of Attraction
Playing with and learning about magnets can be an almost magical experience for children. Find out more about the science behind them here (toddlers), here (primary) or here (GCSE). Try some fun magnetic experiments; this magnetic gizmo will help you make different observations about their properties, or make your own electromagnet using a battery and nail. Older kids could try making their own magnetic levitation booth. Alternatively, combine art with science to make these building blocks, try this magnetic painting technique, or create images using iron filings.

EVENT What a Wonderful Wold
Discover the wonderful landscapes of the Yorkshire Wolds, from coasts to hills, at this week’s annual Walking and Outdoors Festival. Try bush craft and navigation, take a seabird cruise, take part in a beach clean, hunt for bats and moths, or try open water swimming. There are events for the tiniest of nature lovers; head to Howden Marsh for a sensory exploration of the natural environment. Each event ticketed separately. Full line-up here
