Many women find that becoming a mother is a catalyst for their creativity. Growing, birthing and nurturing a baby often connects women to a deeper sense of their creative power; the challenge is finding time to honour it. Many women report feelings of heightened intuition as they enter this phase of their lives, and experience a depth of emotion new to them. Writing is a great way to release pent up emotion or frustration that might come with the territory of parenting.

Poetry and fiction might begin to take on new meanings as our world expands exponentially.

Mslexia is a quarterly magazine for “women who write”. The name comes from Ms meaning “woman” and lexia meaning “words”. There is also a play on the word dyslexia, signifying women’s disadvantage in terms of the respect, media recognition and space given to women’s written word. Mslexia is a fantastic publication, packed with inspiration and featuring all kinds of writing, from blogs to speedwriting, short stories to poetry. There’s also plenty of advice to be found, with editors, publishers and bestseller authors offering their ideas and thoughts on the writing and publishing process, including events taking place to kickstart your writing. This issue features tips for crowdfunding your book and information on writing as therapy amongst other articles, and the content is always fresh and up to date.

With plenty of competitions running throughout the year, there are lots of reasons to keep writing, and once you have enjoyed an issue you’ll find yourself twitching to find pen and paper. Every issue includes a short story and poetry competition on a particular theme. It’s exciting to read the variations of women’s responses to the subject, and further inspiring to read their short biographies at the end of each piece. They are ordinary women just like you and me, and they mostly juggle their writing with motherhood, work and a whole gamut of other responsibilities. That, in itself, helps shake off the excuses.

In the all-consuming world of motherhood, it is uplifting (and perhaps vital to the sanity) to carve a creative niche for yourself. Often we need tools to help us do that, or at the very least to remind us that it’s possible. Every time Mslexia plops through the letterbox, it comes with the affirming message that you too are a writer and that your writing time is sacred.
