When making a healing balm for children, the simpler the better. This six ingredient balm is super easy to make and can be used on patches of dry or irritated skin and to treat minor scrapes and scratches. Since lemon balm is a powerful anti-viral, it is also an effective treatment for cold sores.

Lemon Balm Ointment
This ointment can be used to give relief to chicken pox or shingles sores, or as a general healing salve to soothe irritated skin, says Rachelle Blondel. Feeling run down, with the familiar tingle that means there’s a cold sore outbreak on the way? Nip it in the bud with this effective ointment and help speed up the healing process.

INGREDIENTS
30ml almond oil, 1 tbsp beeswax, 1 tbsp cocoa butter, 10 drops melissa (or melissa blend*) essential oil, 5 drops tea tree essential oil, 5 drops lavender essential oil, 2 x 15ml pots

  1. Place the almond oil, beeswax and cocoa butter into a bowl set over a pan of simmering water and stir until the solids have melted and are well combined. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.
  2. Add the drops of essential oils into the base mix, stirring constantly, then pour your ointment into the small pots and secure the lids tightly.
  3. Pop the pots into the fridge to allow the ointment to harden. Use on irritated skin to heal and soothe.

* PURE MELISSA OIL is rare and costly and often adulterated with various other cheaper oils such as lemongrass, lemon verbena or lemon. A good blend will be very similar in composition to the pure oil, but at a much more affordable price.
