RECIPE - Mega Marrow
Our greengrocers’ shelves are groaning with massive, marvellous marrows. Marrow is a little neglected – but it’s more than a big courgette! Try a Spanish Stuffed version or cook yours as Nigel Slater suggests – with peas and basil, sweetcorn or with lentils and spinach. Alternatively, take a sweeter path and make Marrow and Ginger Jam, or a moist Marrow and Pecan Cake with Maple Icing.

EVENT - Frankenlove
The programme at IF Oxford – a festival of science and ideas – is always inventive and inspiring. This year, all events are being run on a Pay What You Decide system. Family fun includes finding out about the poetry of science, uncovering knowledge in a cemetery, story telling sessions, coding and practical skills workshops. Meanwhile, teenagers will enjoy plumbing and cycle repair skill sessions, hip hop performances, and a celebration of 200 years of Frankenstein that includes contemporary stage shows, finding out how to stitch a skin repair on parchment and making a Frankenzine! Until October 22.

MAKE and DO - Wind Powered
We love flying kites at this time of year – it’s the perfect activity to keep kids engaged when you’re out and about. Why not try making your own? This is a traditional paper flyer which looks pretty, but is a little fragile, while, at the other end of the spectrum, this bin bag design is more hardwearing and easier to fly. Delta kites look a little more glamorous – try creating this one, or this more complicated version that upcycles a broken umbrella. We also like this guide to making your own delta flyer - there’s also a video full of great tips for kite flying. Alternatively, you can’t go wrong with an affordable, shop-bought pocket kite – ours never fails to impress and is easy on little hands.

EVENT - Mirror, Mirror
This weekend, strike a pose and make like a mannequin in the temporary mirrored studio at The Serpentine Galleries in London’s Hyde Park. Artist Harold Offeh is inviting families to create repetitive poses and positions which will be mirrored and distorted. Create a GIF to capture your experiments! Free, all weekend. The gallery is only a hop and skip away from the excellent, free, Peter Pan-themed Diana Memorial Playground. Keep an eye out on Sunday for the runners in the Royal Parks Half Marathon.

EVENT - Free Half-term Fun
It’s half-term in Scotland! Find free and cheap events happening across the country; printing and boat-making in Glasgow museums, creativity inspired by iconic picture Monarch of the Glen at the Scottish National Gallery, or ocean exploring using microscopes at Aberdeen’s Maritime Museum. Or head to Dundee’s Science Festival to upcycle jewellery, join in rocket launches and find out about girls and women in STEM. Plus October Tayfest is packed with family-friendly events that embrace Perthshires’s spectacular natural playgrounds.
