MAKE Solar Power

Set up a craft table in the garden and create some beautiful suncatchers. Hang them in your windows, and, come bright wintry mornings, you’ll have a little reminder of summer blooms and outdoor fun. We love the huge variety of the creations here at Artful Parent - especially the nature-inspired ones such as this and this 3D take

EVENT Beyond the Fringe

Every August, the streets of Edinburgh are filled with crazily dressed performers, music and laughter, as the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe Festival spring into life. The Fringe is perhaps best known for its adult comedy offerings, but there’s also lots going on for younger culture vultures. This year expect world-class circus performances at Underbelly’s Circus Hub from Circolombia’s Acéléré to Circus Abyssinia: Ethiopian Dreams, a child-friendly (but still spooky) wander through Edinburgh’s underground vaults, plus dozens more storytelling sessions, puppet shows, dance spectaculars and workshops. Various prices

RECIPE and LEARN Purplicious
We’ve found a few early blackberries lurking in hedgerows and parks. Why not go for a foraging expedition and see what you can find? This year, we’ve vowed to go beyond jam and crumble and venture into more interesting recipe territories. Blackberry fool sounds delicious, blackberry zabaglione appeals to our sweet tooth and Yotam Ottolenghi’s grilled apricots and blackberries with ginger nut biscuits and cream is going to be utterly divine. Meanwhile, find out more about the science behind the blackberry’s colour here

MAKE Maid of Honour
We’re a little obsessed with the sensory appeal of two-toned mermaid fish scale fabric (find it here – when you brush your hand across the sequinned material it reverses and becomes a different colour. Find it on eBay, then try some crafts. We love this no-sew fidget bag, and these fun pillow games (find pillows here)

EVENT Latin Lessons
This Sunday, Nursery Row Park, near Elephant and Castle in London will be turned into a colour-soaked, noisy celebration of all things Latin American, at Plaza Latina. Join dance workshops to learn Columbian cumbias or vallenato, eat pupusas from El Salvador or Venezuelan arepas, make piñatas, have your face painted, and learn about the diverse cultures of the continent. Free.
