EVENT, LEARN, DO Dropping Science
Science Week (March 8–17) is a great springboard for kids to explore the world of STEM. Held over ten days, expect explosions to be erupting across the country. Find an event near you here and download activity packs here. We’re especially excited about trying out the festival’s innovative Run With The Ancestors app – one million years of British history contained within a 10k or 5k run – get healthy while learning fascinating facts. Download it for free here or head to the live race at the Queen Elizabeth Park on March 16.

EVENT Whizz Pop Bang!
Science Week’s blockbuster event is the free, huge Big Bang Scientists and Engineers Fair, held in Birmingham’s NEC on March 13–16. There are hundreds of shows, stalls and demonstrations; race some of the fastest athletes on Earth, play a fruit piano or draw a digital drum kit, fly drones, learn about energy through dance, and make your own medicine from edible ingredients. There are also lots of inspiring real-life scientists on hand to chat to and find out about career opportunities. Reserve your free tickets ahead. Or find a Big Bang nearer you here

RECIPE Junior Masterchef
Making food with your children can be one of the most rewarding, warm things to do as a family. They learn valuable life skills, and you (potentially) sew the seeds for many years of breakfasts in bed prepared by your kids. Well, that’s the dream, anyway. There are some lovely ideas and a great chart of simple tasks for little hands here. Older children can cook more complex dishes – there’s a great selection here, which includes some Asian-inspired deliciousness. Vegan teens (and their parents) might find inspiration from this selection of recipes – the Cherry Meringue Pie sounds amazing!

EVENT, MAKE, LEARN The Reading Festival

Yeah! It’s World Book Day! Eek! It’s World Book Day costume panic time! Find inspiration for last minute outfits here (including some cunning ideas for kids who aren’t keen on dressing up) . All UK school children will receive a voucher to exchange for one of twelve exclusive books – which one will you choose? Home educated pupils won’t miss out – parents and carers can apply for tokens here and there are some excellent lesson plans for all ages here. Why not try writing your own story this year? There’s a brilliant step-by-step guide written by some of the UK’s best kids authors here. If you write a particularly good tale, you could enter it into Radio 2’s 500 Words competition – the closing date is Friday evening.
