EVENT Sparks Will Fly

Celebrate the transformation of summer into winter at Edinburgh’s Samhuinn Fire Festival. The Beltane Fire Society’s blazingly spectacular, fire-suffused show takes place in the picturesque, atmospheric old town, and is a blend of street theatre, pyrotechnics and performance. Watch a stand-off between the summer and winter kings, overseen by the Cailleach, a Celtic representation of the Goddess. The show focuses on the transition that many aspects of life take during the changing of the seasons. A truly magical, spiritual way to spend Halloween. October 31. LEARNING AND EVENTS Light Up

If you live in a large city, even if you’re not religious, you’ll always know when Diwali is in full swing - the flashes, bangs and crashes give it away. We’ve got a round-up of some of the most spectacular celebrations and firework displays across the country here, which include parties in London, Leicester, Glasgow and Manchester. We’ve also got some ideas of ways to celebrate Diwali with your family; including a dreamily good recipe for mango lassi.

RECIPE Sweetly Sour
It’s the last knockings of crab apple and sloe season, but you’ve got just about enough time left to go out foraging. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s hedgerow-inspired recipes have our mouths watering, and provide some alcohol-free alternatives to using sloes (although sloe gin is always on our to-make list!)

CRAFT Eeeeeeek!
Decorating your house for trick or treating season? These monster-and-body-part-filled specimen jars are huge fun to make, and look really horrific. We love the ones that use obscure monsters from Star Wars to great effect. Why not try emptying some glow sticks into the liquid to create an eerie glow?

RECIPE Spooky Fruit
Halloween generally means bucketfuls of sweets, sticky punches, and chocolate skulls. These tangerine pumpkins and banana ghosts are a healthier alternative to the sugar-fest, and super-spooky too!
