INSPIRATION

My interest in cruelty-free, vegan and natural products started after I made the transition to a vegan lifestyle in 2013. I found that my beauty choices were continually compromised – luxury organics were either too expensive, too fussy or ‘secretly’ tested on animals and I wanted simple, affordable, cruelty-free products that smell and feel amazing, and really work. I have always loved the simplicity and efficacy of natural cold-pressed oils, and spent a year researching, playing, testing and trialling before I was happy with our first product: our Tropical Hair Treatment. It’s now a global bestseller, and Lani is proving that natural beauty products can be conscious and effective – without costing the earth.

BEST BEAUTY ADVICE

Keep it simple. We don’t need to over complicate our beauty routine. For me that means that on some nights I skip moisturizer all together and let me my skin just be. I personally don’t feel the need to add layer upon layer to my skin. The same goes for make up. I keep my daily make up minimal and there are days when I don’t wear any. It feels quite liberating.

DESERT ISLAND PRODUCT

If I had to choose just one product, I’d make it a versatile one such as our award-winning Super Serum. Not only would it keep my facial skin balanced and nourished, it also works wonders on the lips, as a hair serum and on any dry areas on the body.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOUR BRAND?

I’m working on some amazing new product launches at the moment. We’ve also got some exciting brand collaborations coming up and Lani is making its way to more retailers across the globe.

TAKE ACTION AT HOME

• Go natural.

Have a good look around your bathroom shelves and see what products you currently use that you can swap with a natural alternative? The average woman puts around500 synthetic chemicals on her body every day and it is estimated that60 percent of what we put onto our skin is thought to be absorbed into our bodies. Many of those chemicals have been linked to a number of health problems from allergies to endocrine disruption and we don’t quite know yet the long-term health impacts. Use up what you have left and go on the hunt for some nice natural, cruelty-free and vegan products.

• Ditch the plastic.

Most of us are aware of the impact single use plastics have on our planet so it’s best to look for cosmetics packaged in reusable (and prettier) glass bottles and jars where possible. Certain types of plastic can leach into products, and some plastics can even be broken down over time by essential oils (this is why perfume is always housed in glass). Opaque glass is also a perfect barrier against oxygen and light and ingredients such as antioxidants are very sensitive to both (some plastics are so thin that they’ll let light through).

• Buy vegan and cruelty-free.

Beauty shouldn’t hurt you, our fellow earthlings or the planet so making sure the products you buy aren’t tested on animals will not only spare innocent animals, it’ll also help the planet since facilities that engage in animal testing dispose of potentially dangerous chemicals, waste, and other by-products of their testing processes into the land and and sea. Also, check that your cosmetics are free from animal derived ingredients. It can be quite astonishing to find out how many animal by-products are squeezed into cosmetics these days and when we empower ourselves with the knowledge of where things originate from, we empower ourselves to make kinder, and more positive choices.
